Marie Hill interview

picinterview

How old are you and where are you from ?

I am 26 years old and originally from Aarhus

Where have you been studying?

I studied fashion print at Central Saints Martins

What prize did you win?

I won the L’Oréal Professionel Young Designer of the Year Award

How long have you been designing?

For as long as I can remember

How does the design process work for you?

I always start out with gathering inspiration that initially is often very abstract. Normally I begin with exploring a certain mood and feeling that provides me with an idea of what direction I want to go in when looking for my visual research for the collection. Funnily enough, the prints are always the last thing I do.

What are you inspired by?

I’m inspired by anything that invokes a feeling in me, be it books, music, films, art. What always interests me is taking the known and placing it in an unknown context.

 Do you have any icons?

I’m afraid that my mind doesn’t work that way.

Who is your favourite designer?

I admire different designers for different things. When it comes to print I have a lot of respect for Jonathan Saunders. I have always admired Alexander McQueen for his very unmodern sense of theatricality and the way he always tells a story through his creations. I also really like a lot of the new London based designers.

What is the story behind your designs?

My graduate collection is based around the idea of a modern type of the 1980’s power women and an attempt to create a contemporary uniform for the female body. A general key word in the collection is the luxurious self-indulgence which shows in the predominant focus on the body. The collection is a very textual one where the different prints come to life on the body and through it’s movements.

How would you describe your everyday style?

I wouldn’t…

What is your favourite part of fashion?

The play with identities and creating new meanings and something that is hopefully beautiful.

What is your favourite hangout places and shops in London?

The darkest corners of Hackney.

What’s next for you?

A much needed break and then hopefully continuing to explore both the printing and designing parts of fashion whether it’s through a MA degree or through working for a design house.
